How Clear Aligners Work

Clear aligners are a series of transparent, custom-designed plastic trays that shift your teeth gradually into proper alignment.

  • Each tray applies gentle, targeted pressure to specific teeth. You wear each set for one to two weeks before advancing to the next tray in the series, with each tray moving your teeth a fraction of a millimeter closer to the final position.
  • The aligners are removable. You take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush and floss.
  • Because there are no brackets or wires, there are no food restrictions and no special tools required for cleaning your teeth. The trays go back in immediately after.
  • Wear compliance matters. The aligners only work when they are in your mouth. The target is 20 to 22 hours per day. Falling consistently short of that window extends treatment time and can affect how accurately your teeth track to the plan.

iTero Digital Scanning: No Impressions, No Putty

Vitality Dental uses iTero digital scanning technology to map your teeth before treatment begins. The iTero wand captures thousands of data points per second as it passes over your teeth and gums, producing a precise 3D model without any putty impressions.

The scan takes a few minutes. The resulting model becomes the foundation for your custom treatment plan: it is the exact geometry that determines how each tray is designed, how far each tooth moves per stage, and what the final position will look like. Because the data is digital, it can be reviewed immediately on screen, and you can see a projected outcome before committing to treatment.

The iTero scan also lets us check fit and progress at follow-up visits without additional physical impressions. If refinements are needed at any point, a new scan captures your current tooth position, and a revised series of trays is produced from that updated data.

The Clear Aligner Treatment Process, Phase by Phase

Phase 1: Initial Consultation

Your first appointment is a consultation to discuss your goals and evaluate your teeth, bite, and gum health. We examine whether clear aligners are the right treatment for your case and, if so, what the treatment will involve. Not every alignment concern requires aligners; not every aligner candidate is the same complexity. The consultation establishes which category your case falls into before anything is scanned or planned.

Phase 2: Digital Scanning and Treatment Plan

Once you decide to proceed, we perform the iTero digital scan. The scan data is used to design a personalized treatment plan showing your teeth at each stage of movement from start to finish. You can review the step-by-step transformation on screen before your aligners are fabricated.

Your custom aligners are made using SmartTrack material, a proprietary formulation engineered for controlled force delivery and a precise fit against the tooth surface. Each tray in your series is slightly different from the last, representing the incremental tooth movement for that stage.

Phase 3: Active Treatment

You receive your aligners and wear each set for one to two weeks before switching to the next. Progress check-ups are scheduled approximately every 6 to 8 weeks. These appointments are brief: we confirm your teeth are tracking correctly to the plan, address any discomfort or fit questions, and hand off the next set of trays if you are not self-managing that at home.

When you switch to a new tray, you may notice slight tightness for the first day or two. That pressure indicates the tray is working. It typically resolves as your teeth adjust to the new position within the first 48 hours.

Phase 4: Refinements

Some cases benefit from a refinement phase at the end of active treatment: a new scan of your current position, a revised set of trays targeting any teeth that did not fully reach their planned position, and a short additional treatment period to close the gap. Refinements are built into the treatment process and do not indicate a problem; they are a standard adjustment mechanism when fine-tuning is needed.

Phase 5: Retention with Vivera Retainers

Treatment ends when your teeth reach their final position. You then receive Vivera retainers to maintain your results. Vivera retainers are worn full-time initially, then transition to nighttime wear only as your teeth stabilize in their new positions. Without consistent retainer use, teeth tend to drift back toward their original positions over time. The retainer phase is not optional; it is what preserves the outcome.

Which Alignment Issues Clear Aligners Can Correct

Clear aligners at Vitality Dental treat a range of bite and alignment issues:

  • Crowded teeth: insufficient space causes teeth to overlap or rotate
  • Gaps between teeth: extra space between one or more teeth
  • Overbites: upper front teeth extend too far over the lower front teeth
  • Underbites: lower teeth protrude in front of the upper teeth
  • Crossbites: upper and lower teeth do not meet correctly on one or both sides
  • Open bites: upper and lower front teeth do not make contact when the back teeth are closed
  • Misaligned teeth: general rotations or positioning issues not captured by the above categories

If you are unsure whether your case qualifies, the consultation is the right place to find out. Some bite issues involve skeletal components that aligners alone cannot correct; in those cases, we will tell you at the consultation and discuss what alternatives exist.

Clear Aligner Attachments: What They Are and When They Are Used

Some treatment plans include small, tooth-colored attachments bonded to the surface of specific teeth. These attachments act as handles: they give the aligner additional grip, enabling more precise and complex tooth movements than a smooth tray surface alone can achieve.

Attachments are used for cases that involve significant rotation, vertical movement, or teeth that are difficult to move predictably with aligner pressure alone. They are matched to your tooth color and are not visible from conversational distance. When treatment is complete, the attachments are removed and the tooth surface is polished.

Not every patient requires attachments. Whether they are part of your plan depends on the specific movements your treatment plan calls for. We review this with you when presenting your treatment plan at the scan appointment.

Cost, What Is Included, and Payment Options

Clear aligner treatment at Vitality Dental ranges from $3,000 to $6,000. The exact cost depends on case complexity and treatment length.

The fee includes:

  • All aligners required for your full treatment
  • Regular monitoring appointments throughout active treatment
  • Initial refinements if needed
  • One set of Vivera retainers at the end of treatment

Payment options include flexible payment plans, major credit cards, HSA and FSA funds, and CareCredit financing. If you have dental insurance with an orthodontic benefit, that benefit typically applies to clear aligner treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clear Aligners in Plano

Are there food restrictions with clear aligners?

No. Because the aligners are removable, you take them out before eating or drinking anything other than water. There are no brackets to work around and no foods that are off-limits. Remove your trays, eat normally, brush before putting them back in.

How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?

20 to 22 hours daily. That leaves two to four hours for meals and oral hygiene. Consistent wear is what keeps your treatment on schedule. Patients who regularly wear aligners fewer than 20 hours per day typically experience slower progress and may need additional trays at the end.

Will clear aligners affect my speech?

A slight lisp may occur when you first start wearing aligners. Most patients find it resolves within a few days as they adapt to the feel of the trays. Reading aloud for a few minutes each day during the first week can speed up the adjustment.

What happens at the 6 to 8 week check-up appointments?

We confirm that your teeth are tracking correctly to the treatment plan, check fit and alignment, and address any questions. If you are managing tray changes at home between visits, we verify the sequence is on track. These appointments are brief, usually 15 to 20 minutes.

Do I need attachments, and will they be visible?

Attachments are only used when your treatment plan calls for complex movements that require additional grip on specific teeth. They are tooth-colored and bonded to match your tooth surface, making them difficult to notice at normal conversational distance. They are removed and the surface is polished when treatment is complete.

How long will I need to wear retainers after treatment?

Retainer wear is ongoing, not a fixed endpoint. After treatment you wear Vivera retainers full-time initially, then transition to nighttime wear. Most patients continue with nightly retainer use indefinitely to prevent teeth from shifting back. Teeth do not stay in position on their own; the retainer is what maintains the result.

Vitality Dental is a privately owned, boutique practice in Plano. The iTero scan, the custom treatment plan review, and the answers to your questions all happen at the same location, with the same team. If you are ready to find out whether clear aligners are the right path for your case, the consultation is the place to start.

New and existing patients welcome. Same-day consultations available when scheduling allows.
